    Excellent

This well-written novel helped me to understand the refugee crisis in the world today through a number of lenses. Bala writes with clear-eyed compassion and shows us how the system works - and doesn't work - here.

The Boat People tells the story of 503 Tamil boat people who sought refugee status upon arrival off the coast of British Columbia in 2009. I found the story fascinating and intriguing as to their lives and the processes they endured.
