Dark subject matter but easy reading

An interesting format as the chapter headings count us up to a funeral. "SIixteen dy before the funeral". "Nine days before the funeral". And, occaisionally, "Five years and two months before the funera". This book tells the story of an abusive man and three different women he terrorizes. Quite dark in places, it has a number of twists and turns to keep you guessing. The story kept me suitably entertained for a rainy weekend.

    A fun and quirky read

This is a story which requires a lot of suspension of disbelief. I did enjoy the story and it held my interest. The characters were lovable for their quirks. Lonelyness is one of the powerful themes in the book. The exes have lonelyness and disconection in common. In the end they have come together to be the support system they all need. I recommend this book for a great beach read.

    Ominous, relentless, and intense!

The Exes’ Revenge is a character-driven, domestic thriller that delves into how much relationships define us and reminds us that hell hath no fury as a woman scorned. The prose is gritty and taut. The characters, including the sinister, despicable villain are consumed, ruthless, complex, and vulnerable. And the plot, using a back-and-forth, past/present style does a nice job of building tension and unease as it subtly intertwines and unravels an intricate web of lies, secrets, abuse, control, desperation, vengeance, violence, and manipulation. Overall, The Exes’ Revenge is an unnerving, relentless, satisfying read and even though I felt the plot was slightly unrealistic at times it is still a compelling, entertaining debut for Jakeman, and I can’t wait to read what she comes up with next.
