  • A fresh approach to a dark and difficult subject area. . .

Though the characters live through the depression, with tragic starts to their lives, the story finds levity and value in telling their tales of hardship and love. An enjoyable style of writing as well. A great read!

  • Sigh.

Read this if you are a child at heart who has had joy, heartache and loss - and if you have taken risks that have sometimes rewarded, sometimes disappointed. Read this if there is a clown in your life, or if you yourself are that clown.

  • As it is

You either hate this novel or accept it as is; only then can you truly appreciate the marvellous eccentricity of it. Like a tumultuous snowstorm it carries you up and down and around until you are dizzy with emotions that are hard to identify. Do not have expectations going into this novel, and definitely don't have hope for the plot. Let it guide you through the way Heather O'Neill intended.

  • A bittersweet slice of Montreal History

A city known for hedonism and good times notoriously has a dirty underbelly. We romanticize the open city Montreal became during the Great Depression without realizing there was a body count. Heather O'Neill spins a bittersweet story with her typical innocent mysticism, a childlike view of death, abandonment, and cruelty. For anyone who sees life as a celebration of survival this is a great book. For many, it will be too difficult to face but despite some of the more difficult subject matter once again it is a modern classic
