    Excellent writing!

This was a difficult book to put down. I highly recommend it for entertainment and cultural appreciation of Newfoundland and their beautiful people!

A delightful read! Sometimes amusing, touching and rich with image provoking descriptions and dialogue.

    One of my favourites

Love this book and usually read it once a year. It's a classic and the writing is superb. I feel as if I know Newfoundland in some way, even though I've never been there before .

    The Shipping News

Sentences. Missing. Frustrating read. This story was a great concept and Proulx clearly did her homework regarding Newfoundland weather, inshore fishing, the insular village life and the character of Newfoundlanders. The many and varied descriptions of nature and weather were spot-on and perhaps the best part of the book as the weather was the main character in the book - as Newfoundland really is. I question what is gained by or meant to signify by the many choppy, non-sentences. Verbs are good; they do not leave a reader flailing about looking for meaning.
