    They Left Us Everything

I am at a loss as to why the author wrote this book. No one's life is perfect and we all have family issues - but why the need to write a "memoir" of two such unlikeable people? The father beat his children, abandon his daughter at boarding school and abused his dog - yet she somehow wants us to like him as the "good" parent. I still have not figured out exactly who or what her mother was - eccentric? selfish? cruel? It is impossible to get to know these people - mostly, I think, because the author hasn't figured that out herself.

    Great read

This felt like a long love letter to a place and to family. For anyone who has had to deal with the death of parents and the dispersal of a lifetime of acquisitions loaded with memories...you must read this book

They Left Us Everything is something I'd recommend

As someone whose own parents are elderly and also thinking of my own children and wondering how to age gracefully, (leaving less stuff and more memories behind) I found Plum's story honest and emotional and a bit of a how to. With her family's rich history and the colourful characters who were her parents and their position in the community it was easy to see how difficult it was for her to pack up the house, her history and gain closure. I was fascinated by how her siblings were able to navigate the tasks without dissolving into a family feud. I also could relate to the need to separate the junk from the treasures. Thoroughly enjoyed this story and will most likely read it again.
