    It's the Core that Counts

The author gives beautifully crafted descriptions of the southern surroundings in contrast to the lives of people who are rather stagnant. I found the narrative a bit slow, but definitely realistic. While it may seem hopeless, in fact there is quality and strength in the core family. Jesmyn Ward is a talented writer, and has woven many elements together carefully to create a sense that people have strong values despite being what others may consider poor or hopeless.
