    Fascinating Urban Fantasy

I finished Zoo City by Lauren Beukes a few weeks ago and it has stuck with me. Like all of Beukes' books, it has a killer hook: what would the world look like if criminals are magically, mysteriously bonded to an animal? There are a few nods in here to Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series, which has a similar trope, but this novel much grittier: scammer Zinzi and her sloth must find a missing teen idol in the seedy underbelly of the South African music scene. I loved the worldbuilding: each elements of magic is seamlessly integrated into this society, from the poaching of magical animals, to scientific research of animal bonds, to an animal-based caste system. The plot is sharply executed and satisfying, and Zinzi is a reckless and clever protagonist. I keep thinking about this book and wanting more.
