Away from the Kennels, Book 4 moves to Hawaii

    > > Judging a Book by it's Cover < < The male subject on the cover does not, to me, match what I thought he'd look like and the background terrain does not feel like Hawaii. (Just my opinion though). The overall cover blends in with the many other RomSus books out there and probably would not warrant a second glance if not for the title color catching my eye and noticing the author name. > > Looking Deeper < < POV ~> Third-person Book four takes us to Hawaii, where Raul accepts an offer to work for an elite Search and Recovery team that his best friend, Arin, had recently joined. On his first day of reporting in, he receives a call from an unknown number, asking for help. Arin's younger sister, Mali, is on the island doing research with her fellow University colleagues on human trafficking when things go terribly wrong. Now she's on the run and is smart enough to know she's in desperate need of help and safety but when she calls her sister's number, she does not expect Raul to answer the call. The plot concept and cast of characters were strong and dynamic. Chemistry and interaction between Raul and Mali (and Taz) were fantastic. I really enjoyed that the dog was provided a wonderful, intelligent personality and was given as much page space as he was. (Loved the pineapple guilt scene.) Dialogue was smart. The plot unfolded nicely but felt a little more sedate compared to previous books in the series despite the weight of the subject. The conflicts and big climax felt too easily managed, with minimal suspense. I guess I'd expected more threats and/or face-to-face confrontations. Sadly, instead, we had a few cheap potshots from a sniper and a handful of goons guarding a complex. No big, bad guy. No well-trained opposition. It fell flat. The quality of writing was excellent and the story flowed incredibly smooth. Predictability was low but with the conclusion rushing up abruptly, it's hard to say that there was anything solid or satisfying about the ending. The magical "three words" were spoken and there were indeed gestures to indicate that they were willing to give it a go, but nothing set in stone. Overall, good read but not my favorite in the series. .
