    Charming feel-good love story

4.5 stars A very charming feel-good love story about finding your true self and getting a second chance at love. Shep and Andrew meet on the battlefield, a pretend one that is. It is love at first sight, although Andrew hasn’t been interested in guys before. But there is something about Shep that pulls him. After two days, they parted ways again. Andrew wanted to go to college, but instead, he saw no other way than to join the army. Shep is a wanderer at heart, and he goes out conquering the world. The story is told from Andrew’s point of view, and the reader gets to know him quite well. He made the lemonade when life gave him lemons. Optimistic, down-to-earth, and he excepts his sexuality. Through the years the two men kept writing letters, and through those, we learn more about Shep as well. To be honest, though, I would have loved reading more of Shep’s letters as I felt I missed some more background. That is the reason I thought their declaration of love a bit sudden when they reunite after having been five years apart. Although I did feel the connection between the two men, I felt it was more a getting to know each other again than a The written word is very important in this book. The letters, but also Andrew’s dyslexia and that of his neighbor, fourteen-year-old Carlos, whom Andrew helps coping with his own dyslexia. And what Andrew would never have thought, that his writing away his nightmares will open new doors for him. All in all, a well-written (yes, the importance of the written word again) romance with some angst and lots of sweet moments.

    4.5 Stars! Second-Chance Gay Romance

✩ ✩ ✩ ✩ FOUR & 1/2 - STAR ✩ REVIEW ✩ ✩ ✩ ✩ > > Judging a Book by it's Cover < < A singular male form is seen standing in a field with arms stretched wide. Fairly non-descript cover. If not for the fact that the author's name caught my attention, I might have passed this one up. > > Looking Deeper < < POV ~> First Person. Andrew's perspective. Andrew and Shep first noticed one another at the site of a battlefield recreation but it was not until they'd turned 18 that they were suddenly brave enough to speak to one another, seeing as how they were playing opposite roles in the reenactment and Andrew's father was extremely strict about fraternizing with the "enemy" during the duration of their mock war games. Life pulled Andrew and Shep apart. Andrew's own insecurities drove a bigger wedge into anything that could have been. After Andrew endured a personal hell, Shep managed to contact him yet again. They met again, after years apart, and seemingly seamlessly pick up where they'd left off. This was a nice #SecondChance #GayRomance novella. I think it served as a nice reminder that we should learn to be better at rolling with life's punches, deal with the crap hand we were dealt and continue onward and upward. Well- written cast and plot. . Rating: [R] ~ Score: 4.375 ~ Stars: 4.5, if I could ========================== ⭐ ⭐ **** Disclosure of Material: I received a copy of this book from the Author/Publisher with the hope that I would voluntarily leave unbiased and unsolicited feedback.
