Another great historical novel by Carla Kelly

I'm a huge fan of Carla Kelly's books, not only because of their impeccable historical setting, but also because of her deft storytelling and likeable, liveable characters. This book offers all of that, but with perhaps even more than her usual perception and insight into human nature. It's not easy to weave a love story around characters who have had their lives profoundly altered by war, and the worst brutalities that accompany it. That's exactly what the author has done in "One Good Turn," however. Perceptive, touching, and funny in turns, this is a book I'll keep handy to re-read... probably a few times!

    Out of war comes peace

History books give us the facts, although the victor usually gets the final word. It is novels like this that humanise history and allow us to see the events from a different perspective. In another review of one of Ms Kelly's books ("Marrying the Captain") I wrote of her military Regencies based on the Royal Navy and not from the point of view of army veterans who had been at Waterloo or on the Peninsula Campaign. I am pleased that this novel proves me wrong. The relationship between Nez and Liria is backgrounded by the events of the third siege of Badajos and the effects on the lives of people who were there. Nez's relationships with former soldiers from his old regiment and with his own servants shows someone who is special. Even more special is Sergeant Carr of the Nineteenth whose positive influence permeates every aspect of this novel. I loved the reference to the Waterloo Seed Company as I have just finished the novel that comes from, so it was good to know that that was obviously a success. Having read Georgette Heyer's "The Spanish Bride" and "An Infamous Army", I found this to be a novel which rounded out the experience.
