    Medicine and voodoo

Once I got started reading, couldn’t put it down. Liked the paranormal bend.

    Where will we go next?

I have never read this author before, but after reading this one, I’m sure to pick up more. Ben is a med student who picks up either a curse or a new disease while visiting catacombs in France. What follows is Ben trying to come to grips with which one it actually is while the people in his life fall prey to whatever he has. I found this book well-written, especially the parts about the voudou religion. I love it when authors really put authenticity by doing a lot of research for their books as it makes the books so much more believable. Along with the great research and writing, the book was fast-paced, had lots of interesting turns, and had an interesting horror plot. Admittedly, I did find the characters a little less defined than I would have liked to really be invested in them, and sometimes I found Ben to be a little too wishy-washy and stubborn about what was going on. With all of this, this is the first in a series, and I’m not sure where we are going to go from here, but I am willing to pick up the next one. Recommend! Thanks to NetGalley and Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA)/ScienceThrillers Media for the e-book which I voluntarily reviewed.

    Great read

This book is a real page-turner. Ben is a likable hero. He’s 3-dimensional and his reaction to having his world thrown off balance is believable. The medicine is interesting. The Vodou is fun to learn about. All in all a great read for thriller fans.

    A book worth delving into

I really got into this book. Anyone who likes medical thrillers or voodoo lore will love this book. Honestly it took a bit of time for me to get into this book. There are so many characters that all play important roles in the storyline. There is a bit of repetition in the middle of the book with people falling ill. The last half or more was fantastic with twists and turns and unexpected surprises. I am so glad that I did not stop reading.

    An interesting ride

First time I've read this author. Positives: she knows her medical stuff and explains the terms without becoming too technically involved; the plot and mystery are well put forward; the Vodou background I found interesting and the scheme behind the theft of Ben and son's blood is intricate; the characters are well developed although I found out pretty quickly that I didn't care for Ben but I did about the people with whom he interacted. The negatives: an overly long book for the subject; the endless sequences of Ben's rushing about had me skimming in the last third of the book and I thought this weakened the novel with its redundant 'hurry, hurry' that ironically slows the novel down.
