    An additctive read

    C. J. Archer’s books always cause me a dilemma – do I exercise restraint and read a little bit each evening while savoring the story, or do I devour it in a day or two? Once again, I had no willpower and caved in – who needs sleep anyway? Archer has a way of painting a vivid picture without the overly flowery, verbose language some historical romance authors use. As a result, the story flows, and I find myself reading and reading and reading. The characters are well-developed – Charlie and Lincoln as well as the secondary ones. I wouldn’t mind seeing a novel that tells Seth’s story. As always, the author has some interesting twists in the plot. I typically don’t read supernatural novels, but I make an exception for Archer – she writes a good historical gothic, relying on building suspense and intrigue rather than overly graphic gore. There’s good chemistry between the Charlie and Lincoln – a definite attraction, but Lincoln is struggling to be faithful to his sworn duty. There’s good banter between the two as well as among Charlie, Seth, Gus, and Cook. Also, I just have to mention how much I love the artwork on the cover. I’m *so* looking forward to the next book in the series to unravel more of Charlie’s background and to unravel the secrets surrounding the mysterious Mr. Fitzroy.

    Multiple Mysteries

This book is a page turner from the moment you begin reading. Character development is thorough and left this reader feeling like the characters came to life on the page. One mystery after another is slowly revealed as we learn more about the main character, Charlie, who, we find out, has been hiding something very important. When finally the mysterious V.F. was revealed I was happily surprised and gratified how well things began to be tied together. Read this as soon as you can. This is the beginning of another great series by C.J. Archer; personally I can’t wait.

    Wonderfully written

Charlotte (Charlie) was thrown out by her father as being evil when a distraught Charlie unwittingly calls her mother's spirit back when her mother passes away. Abandoned & on her own, Charlie has lived the last 5 years disguised as a young boy & learns to survive in the slums as a thief, never staying more than 6 months at a time in a place to protect her disguise. One day caught stealing an apple, Charlie is thrown into prison & in desperation to save herself against her unsavory cell mates, she has no choice but to use her powers for only the 2nd time in her life & escapes. But suddenly Charlie's life takes another drastic turn as her actions bring unwanted attention & she finds herself abducted and in the custody of the head of the Ministry of Curiosities. I loved this book! Charlie is such an engaging character. She's courageous, spirited and gives as good as she gets. I was so amused by her antics in trying to escape from Fitzroy. There's lots of witty, snappy dialogue and sarcasm. Fitzroy is a totally compelling, fascinating character; he's deathly efficient, appears unemotional (though Charlie soon learns to read every small nuances in his mien) and has an almost Ninja like fighting ability. The author gives no clues at all to his background. I'm totally mystified by his character and have to admit that was one of the things that kept me turning page after page until the end. The little hints of romance are brilliantly written and kept me in suspense hoping that Fitzroy would crack! Seth and Gus, Fitzroy's 2 goons are wonderful side characters who provide comic relief as well as added depth to the story. I couldn't put the book down once I started reading it & now I can't wait for the next one. Copy gifted for an honest review

Super Fun in the C.J. Archer Style

In the C.J. Archer style: 18-year-old blonde gets abducted by a 30-year-old gentleman. She vomits a lot, not always for an apparent reason, but the story and character relationships are very fun. The C.J. Archer style gives us more and more of what we love, so the books end up being real page turners!

    Not very well written

I liked the blurb and the plot is alright, but the style of writing did not work for me at all, to the point where I stopped reading after six chapters. I prefer a narrative that holds to the "show, don't tell" idea.
