***SPOILERS*** 3.5 Star Review I have some conflicting feelings about the story. First of all, I thought it was well-written and entertaining. I enjoyed the book and thought the mystery/suspense aspect of the story was thrilling. There were some minor things that bugged me and often took me out of the story. When the ARES men would refer to each other, there would often be a “the older man said” or “the younger man said” that was kind of off-putting. Not that it was a big deal or anything, but it got me to thinking, do these men have significant age differences between each other? Age is not really mentioned of any of the men of ARES, but every time someone was referred to as “older” or “younger” made it difficult to visualize the characters, thus taking my concentration out of the story. Like I said, it’s not a huge deal, but it was a little disconcerting to me while reading. Another thing that bugged me was the lack of growth in Rafe and Annie’s “relationship.” It wasn’t really a relationship, per se. Stuff happened and Rafe was unfortunately in Annie’s path and was quickly swept up in her drama. [By the 40% mark, they were already in bed and Rafe was spouting odes to the tune of, “I’m never letting you go.” and “You’re coming to live with me and be in my bed, etc. etc.” (hide spoiler)] I didn’t feel they had chemistry, more like a relationship of convenience. And I didn’t much care for Annie at all. I feel like her character was eclipsed her past tragedy and we never really see who she is. The men of ARES are interesting. A few men get more page time than others and I felt they had a good dynamic as a team. I just wish we could’ve seen more of them. I thought the suspense was good and some parts of the book were a little difficult to handle, especially the mention of someone’s past that included child abuse. I’m on the fence on whether I want to continue the series. I would recommend the book though because Alexandra Ivy is a gifted author and she did write a good book. I just had some hiccups along my reading journey. ***I was gifted an eBook copy from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. All conclusions reached are my own***

    Great New Series!

Five military men who escaped from torture in a Taliban prison star in this new series by Alexandra Ivy. Each one is physically all a woman could dream for and it seems, from this story, they are also quite willing and able to attract and please any woman they might set their sights on. They are also excellent friends that have become family. Rafe and Annie are the main characters in this first book. Rafe has gone to Newton, Iowa to deal with the house his not so wonderful grandfather left behind when he died. Annie has gone back to the same town due to nightmares she has been having that remind her of a painful time in her past. Wanting to find answers and make peace with her past sees her in Newton again. Rafe and Annie meet in a restaurant, are attracted to one another then become involved in trying to find out more about a serial killer that did his work in Newton 15 years before. The other four members of the team show up, help out and are fleshed out a bit for the future books in the series. Hauk is mentioned most often as having something mysterious going on that will probably be dealt with in the next book. I liked the characters, the tight plot, they excellent writing and the fast paced story. The theme is not new but the characters and their interactions were excellent. I did deduce who one of the bad guys was early in the story but was surprised by the identity of the other one. Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the copy of this book to read and review.

mystery and r/s, heavy on the suspense

Kill Without Mercy is the story of Rafe and Annie. Annie is having visions and returns to Newton to resolve issues from her past. Rafe is in Newton clearing out his grandfather’s house before heading back to Houston and his business with his military buddies. Their military skills come in handy helping Annie resolve her mysterious past. Rafe and Annie meet and it is insta-love. This book has several twists and turns. I did not see the twist at the end. Epilogue ends with a return to Houston for some good beer. This is my first Alexandra Ivy book. She has an extensive back list, but I could not find a scheduled release date for Book 2 in the ARES series listed. I look forward it’s release.
