Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer

OK, so the sword's name is Jack- I like writing reviews but they need to be easy. So there is this boy called Magnus and his mom is dead so he is homeless in Boston. I can't be bothered to write anything else but it is a really good book and read it as a favor for me, K, peeps? Thanks- I knew I could count on you :]

Well that was a fun ride - I want more

OK so I bought this book for my grandson who is 10 next week. He loves the Percy Jackson films and has I think got a few of those books for his future reading materials from my daughter. I have reviewed this with my (YA loving) Adult view and also on the merits on whether it is fine for a 10 year old to read. Do I think its a book Adult YA readers will enjoy - Yes if you want a lighthearted book that makes you laugh at the quips and situations the characters get into. if you want a more adult type story then go find an adult book based on Norse Mythology. Will 10 year olds/teens/school kids love it - Heck yeah of course, I know that my grandson will be giggling away when he is reading parts of the book. Having only watched the films Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and not read this series this review is based purely on this book as its the first I have ever picked up by Rick Riordan. I have read a few books based on the mythology of the Norse tales of old gods, and I am currently reading The Prose Edda so I do know that Mr Riordan has done some research, even if he has taken his own twist ( as an author should) for this series. Do I think I want to continue reading the Magnus Chase books - heck yeah. I had only intended to read a chapter or so to check that my grandson would be fine reading it, and that was that... I didn't put it down and had to order another copy! But that opening chapter heading ( infact the chapter headings are funny by themselves) and the first chapter... well check it out ( its what got me hooked!) Good Morning! You’re Going to Die YEAH, I KNOW. You guys are going to read about how I died in agony, and you’re going be like, “Wow! That sounds cool, Magnus! Can I die in agony too?” No. Just no. (Reviewer Note: I am glad Rick added this as I don't want my 10 yr old grandson trying it!) Don’t go jumping off any rooftops. Don’t run into the highway or set yourself on fire. It doesn’t work that way. You will not end up where I ended up. Besides, you wouldn’t want to deal with my situation. Unless you’ve got some crazy desire to see undead warriors hacking one another to pieces, swords flying up giants’ noses, and dark elves in snappy outfits, you shouldn’t even think about finding the wolf-headed doors. My name is Magnus Chase. I’m sixteen years old. This is the story of how my life went downhill after I got myself killed. So I guess I will be looking out for book 2 soon and also picking up the other series and seeing if my inner child loves these too. Oh and for all you Teachers out there - there is a cool PDF Guide on ReadRiordan website to help you and the kids with reading - glossary - questions - projects.
