    Grand, so!

Would you believe this was my first ever Cathy Kelly? As someone raised on Maeve Binchy that must sound shocker, but I'm only just now getting around to looking for other writers like Our Maeve because I've just been tending to reread hers for so long now. (That said, I've read everything Marian Keyes has ever written, but I never think of her as like Maeve, in fact I think she's COMPLETELY different albeit equally FABLISS in her own right. Anyway you'd be mad not to have read everything she's ever written either way. ) So, the thing is, I didn't really know what to expect with this one. A lovely colleague of mine at the hospital recommended Kelly to me as being "just like Maeve", and sure isn't it always going to be hard to come out well when you're introduced like that?! Initially, I've got to tell yis, Someone Like You didn't come off too well for me. But honestly, that was my fault not Kelly's. She doesn't write like Maeve because no one but Maeve writes like Maeve. And I just need to get that into my head! ANYWAY, so, with that out of the way, once I got into this one and left all thoughts of Maeve behind, I got right into it, so I did. These three women meet on their holiday to Egypt, and get on so well they end up staying in touch when they're back home and sort of keeping an anchor to each other through their lives. It felt a bit like three different books at times, but then isn't that a good thing? Three-books-for-the-price of one – sure, you can't go wrong. The women themselves, God, well, you'd want to kill Hannah right from the start so you would – and then she only gets worse. Emma, you wouldn't want to kill her so much as maybe just hurt her a little. And Leonie – God love her – you'd just want to hug her to death. Now, being as how we're in HEA territory here, you know from the outset they're all going to sort themselves out and be happy in the end, but the fun bit is in finding out how. And it's not all chocolates and roses either, which I think is why I enjoyed this one so much by the end of it – it's filled with all the darkness and despair you can find in just about any family, making it so there's something in there just about any of us can relate to. Kelly doesn't shy away from any of the big issues, God love her. We've Alzheimer's, Bulimia, Infertility, Therapy, all sorts to be getting our teeth into. Sometimes you read novels like this and think, "God, but how does anyone's life run that smoothly?" Not in this one! Which is grand. Sure who wants to read about perfect people with perfect families? We'd hate them, so! Leonie's story was definitely my favourite. I was SO HAPPY for her. And I felt for her missing her girls so much. I suppose I saw myself in her a little, and that's why I was so relieved she was OK in the end. Emma, well, I smiled. Good for her, like. Now Hannah, WELL, if ever there was a woman who didn't deserve her man at the end there! I was FUMIN so I was! But you see, isn't that great? Each character was so well-rounded that I had genuine feelings for each of them, fully invested in them for good or bad (really, FULLY, like 3-in-the-morning-just-finishing-this-chapter fully.) Which means Mrs Kelly is alright by me, so she is.I'm absolutely wanting to get some more of her books, so if any of yis have any you could recommend please give me a shout, so! (One thing that DID annoy me - why ever is there a whippet on the front cover?? It should be a Golden Retriever! I know, I KNOW, it's not important - but it IS! Haha.)

    Gripping read

I really enjoyed this easy to read book. You really got to know each character and there life and wanted to read about one to get bk to reading about the others and catching up on there lives. Lovely half in expected ending. A lovely story of love and friendships and how facing difficulties its always good to have a friend there for you!

Slow starter, but grows into a real page turner

Maeve Binchy was the Queen of "people" books and is much missed. Cathy Kelly is doing a 'grand job' of filling the void left. A lovely read, thoroughly recommended
