    Full of queasy menace

I raced through The Girl on the Train – an utterly compelling novel with one of the most infuriating female narrators I've come across. Rachel is an alcoholic, and her lack of control over herself and the events around her – her inability to stop and think clearly, her unreliable memory – infects the entire narrative with a queasiness and a sour sense of menace. She's at once sympathetic and maddening – but, unlike Maud in Elizabeth is Missing, Rachel is doing all this to herself. Or is she? When the woman who lives a few doors down from her ex-husband and his new wife goes missing – the woman Rachel sees as she passes on the train most mornings – Rachel knows she's seen something, and can't help inserting herself into the story. But is there something more to her obsession? And what really happened on that night that she can't remember. Switching between the stories of Rachel, missing Megan and mistress-turned wife Anna, the strands twist together and apart again, the truth remaining blurred – like the view from the train, like an alcoholic's fuzzy memories – until the very end. I'd convinced myself that everyone was the murderer at some point or another, but it's a mark of the strength of Hawkins's writing that I wanted for Rachel to sort herself out and be ok almost as much as I wanted to know who the murderer was. A great read.

    What a page turner !

Well - I have to say I was a bit unsure about this book given the mixed reviews . . but wow! What a page turner . . it's written sort of 'diary / ledger / log' format between the characters and every log entry leaves you on the edge wanting more - more - more. I can honestly say, I am shattered by reading this all day and all night for the past few days, I just couldn't put it down. The characters are perfectly portrayed and I identified with all of them in their weird and wonderful ways. The plot twists and turns and . . well . . . read for yourself. Very well written - exceptionally so! . . total edge of your seat stuff . . Loved it.

    Interesting story

It was a good story although i did feel the ending was a bit unbelievable, if it was kept a bit more realistic it would have 4 stars

    Gripping!!

A story that haves you gasping and shocked until the last page. A sad story that haves you caring for Rachel till the very end.
