    This is a 5 Star+ book!

At 826 pages it is a long book, however I think that it needs to be long. There are about 50,000 inhabitants of Greenland today. In 1787 there would have been considerably less. The Vikings had a go at settling the place but gave it away as hopeless: they settled on Iceland instead. So, in short, conditions in Greenland were extremely hard. And in hard conditions people do not act in a way that is acceptable to folk of more comfortable conditions and climate. There is so much to be judgemental about in this book, some of the characters are appalling, they really are. But the length of the book begins to immerse the reader in the reality. I found that judgement dropped away and in its place came the understanding that this was how it was, pure and simple. That is the literary quality of this book in bas relief. For me, it changed my mindset as I was reading. I went from my own, perhaps shallow, perspective to an insight of conditions that I have thankfully been spared. There are, in all truth, very few books that I would say people should read. This, however, is one of them. As I read this book in the English translation, massive credit has to go to the translator. The translation conveyed a mood and a presence that was maintained throughout. For me this gets the 5 Stars, only because there is no allowance for more.
