    Assume nothing!

This is a book about a jealous ex-wife Vanessa, a closet drinker who now works at Saks waiting on the women she used to socialize with and obsessing over her ex's fiancee Nellie, a young nursery school teacher. Her obsession borders on stalking and her drinking is about to cost her her job. Nellie is blissfully happy with Richard, a wealthy and handsome hedge fund manager, and is about to give up her life and friends to marry him. For the first third of the book or so I thought it was an okay story about this obsession and stalking but nothing out of the ordinary. It wasn't even all that suspenseful. But since I was given a review copy by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, I thought I had better finish it before ripping it apart. Then came the "Whoa! Wait a minute!" moment. The remainder of the book totally held my attention and kept me reading to find out what other twists the authors had up their sleeves, and there were several. I don't want to spoil the book by revealing more, but keep reading the book. You will love it. The characters, at least the women, were well developed. I could sympathize with Vanessa but I wanted to tell her to get over it already and move on. Nellie was sweet but a little blind not to notice or care how controlling Richard was. Richard may have been handsome and athletic and wealthy but he bordered on Christian Grey in his control of the women (no, not like that! No S&M here. Not even explicit sex). I enjoyed the twists and turns and the narrative jumping back and forth but this may not be everyone's cup of tea. I found this to be a very satisfying read that kept me up finishing it.

    Creepy Intersections

Intense psychological tale. To manipulate or to be manipulated! All facets of our past mold who we are and how we relate to those close to us. Not sure how to review this one without giving key elements away that could ruin the prose. Richard has an ideal of the perfect wife. Shadows of his past have instilled in him a manipulation and violence that like a spoiled child come to the surface when he does not get his way. Vanessa is his second and ex-wife. Her turmoil and struggle with clouded emotions is the driving force of this work by Greer Hendricks. The truth is hidden but is revealed in a surprise ending. Although the merit of this story was driving it just was not plot driven enough for me. "A copy of this book was provided by St. Martin's Press via Netgalley with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read and my comments here are my honest opinion."

    Assume nothing

The synopsis for The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen says it all: "When you read this book, you will make many assumptions. You will assume you are reading about a jealous ex-wife. You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement - a beautiful, younger woman who is about to marry the man they both love. You will assume you know the anatomy of this tangled love triangle. Assume nothing. Twisted and deliciously chilling, Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen's The Wife Between Us exposes the secret complexities of an enviable marriage - and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love. Read between the lies." And that is about all you can say without introducing spoilers. And believe me, you don't want to know what's coming. Just start reading and enjoy the ride, and try to keep up. Nothing is obvious. You will say "Whoa!" out loud and go back several pages to try and figure out why you didn't see that coming. And that will happen again and again. I received an ARC of The Wife Between Us from the publisher, and I have been recommending this book - strongly recommending it - to everyone I know since then. The unreliable narrator story seems to be the thing now, and I enjoy it, but it's getting a little old. Until The Wife Between Us. Is this narrator unreliable? Just who is the narrator? Should we like her or feel sorry for her or be afraid of her? The cast of characters is well-developed and fascinating, and your allegiance to and sympathy for them will bounce back and forth. What just happened? Who's good? Who's bad? What's the agenda? What don't we know? And again, just when you think oh yeah, I get it - WHOA! The story is about marriage, kind of. There's The Husband. What a charmer, kind of. And The Wife, or should I say The Wives? The one who's been tossed aside, the one to-be. Who are they, really? And that's all I'm going to say about it. So much goes on and things happen so quickly and you just can't guess what will happen next. But it flows smoothly and makes sense in the end. I highly recommend The Wife Between Us. It will thrill you and surprise you and make you afraid for. . . for who? Read it now. You'll be glad you did and it will stay with you a long time.
