  • A terrific read!

Having originally discovered Matthew Harffy through the Wolf of Wessex, and further reading my way through the Bernicia Chronicles: A Time for Swords is a terrific book, and continues Matthew’s outstanding ability to weave fact and fiction into a great historical story.

  • Historical

This is a new to me author so I didn’t know what to expect. I love historical novels and the Viking age is such an interesting time in history. I loved the idea of the book of how a young monk changes his life after being a witness to the first Viking attack on the English Coast. It is a journey of self discovery, filled with doubt but also of a being on the right path. I enjoyed the book a lot, but have to admit I skimmed a lot of the fight and battle scenes, because there are a lot and they are lengthy.

  • A time for swords

A medieval adoption of "the good, the bad and the ugly"

  • Spellbinding, truly believable!

The second of Harffy books I have read and both have an air of authenticity usually only found in accomplished writers like Cornwell. This story is truly believable and like all historical fiction is rooted in fact. Highly recommend.
