Not the same calibre as the first book

Maybe my expectations were too high as I absolutely loved a Promise of Fire, but I was disappointed with Breath of Fire. The first book had the perfect balance between romance, action, mystery and humour, whilst this one was more fight scenes and sex scenes, with Cat berating herself and Griffin reassuring her. Cat was too selfless and reckless, and Griffin was over protective and obsessive, and I missed the banter between. It wasn't all bad; I loved the writing, the mythology and the comradery of the Beta clan. It just wasn't the same calibre as the first book.

    Wonderful development

I was worried this book would increase the pace to try and live up to its gargantuan plot from book one but I was not disappointed. The character development was again, at the perfect pace and the new introductions were well received. This book continues to develop a plot where you know what the main event is, but remain surprised at how everyone gets there, which I haven't seen in a long time. It also ends in such a way that questions are answered so you aren't left panicking with a book-hangover but wait in anticipation to see what's coming next! (Thank goodness, because 3 is a while away)
