    Gripping story, creative setting

At its simplest, Chasm City is a hunting story about a man chasing the killer of his employer and his wife. The plot, however, is much more complex than that - there is the main story of Tanner Mirabel pursuing his quarry, but there are also virally-induced flashbacks that cause Tanner to revisit key moments in the life of Sky Haussman, the ship captain both deified and literally crucified by the first settlers of Tanner's homeworld. Chasm City itself, the main setting for Tanner's hunt, is a richly detailed city that was turned from humanity's cultural centre into a decaying ruin by the Melding Plague. The descriptions of this ruined metropolis, and its weird genetically-sculpted denizens, are quite vivid and at times horrifying. Chasm City also deals with the question of identity, as the blending of Tanner's identity with Sky's memories increases and forces the hunter to confront some unsettling truths about himself, and wonder what is the true measure of justice for any killer.

A must read for SF fans

A superb novel in the space opera genre, chasm City weaves a tale over hundreds of years, set across a backdrop of two very different worlds. An intriguing story which can be confusing at times but never gets bogged down. Highly recommended as are most of this author's work.
