    Gripping

Gripping, like Flynn's other addictive novels.

    Unsatisfying

The premise of 'Dark Places' sets you up to expect the plot to operate in a certain type of way. However, I expected a less conventional plot given Gillian Flynn's other works. Flynn's strength is writing characters and their twisted interrelationships. The main character of 'Dark Places', Libby, was a bundle of realistic depression, anger, grudges and neuroses. She was the best part of this book. A great character. However, I thought her motivations to become involved in her brother's case were weak and the resolution of the book unsatisfactory and unbelievable. I also think that if more time had been spent on the main character, her relationship with her brother and other characters in the present, this book may have been more rewarding. Time was spent on this, but it didn't have a satisfying emotional underpinning - many of these scenes were to provide clues dropped as breadcrumbs leading to the finale or used to illustrate the main character's world view. Some books stick in your mind after you've finished them. To me, that is the sign of a good book. Unfortunately, that did not happen with this book. The premise and characterisation should have packed a bigger final punch and 'Dark Places' didn't deliver.

    Dark Places

Excellent! A classic 'who done it' with grit. Will definitely read more from this author.

    Brilliant

This would have to be up top of the list of the best books I've ever read. I liked how the present day was linked to flashbacks from the different characters point of view. It added depth to the plot & hightened the suspense. Don't miss this one!
