    Great read

Although having holidayed in Scilly on many occasions as a child and adult I found the the thought of murder and mayhem intriguing, but highly unlikely. An exciting read with an unusual twist.

    Great setting, lovely protagonist.

I enjoyed this police procedural with all the usual elements: a very engaging policeman, a closed community, a crime with several plausible suspects, a satisfying resolution. All the characters seem well rounded; the dog Shadow is particularly endearing; and the setting in the Scilly Isles beautifully rendered.

    Well crafted detective mystery

Great book. I like a well-crafted detective mystery, which this is, and the sense of location in it is powerfully written. A book should transport you, and this certainly does. My only complaint is that this brilliant title (there is of course a real Hell Bay, which faces the full fury of the Atlantic, hence the name) has been used before by author Sam Llewellyn, so I took a star off for treading on another author's toes. Agents and publishers really should be more careful of such things.

    Stunning book

This book feels like it moves along at a slow pace but don't be fooled. Everything unfolds so tantalisingly slow, the backdrop making for the most deeply atmospheric book I've read in ages. An excellent read.
