    A Thrilling, Chilling Tale

What a book! Let me take a moment to catch my breath! Book 5 is the first I’ve read in the Gina Harte series by Carla Kovach. Although I hadn’t read all preceding four books, Her Dark Heart acts as an excellent standalone to put me in the heart of Gina’s world. The title carries foreboding and I began to wonder if this book would be more a domestic suspense than a crime thriller, revealing a bond that has slowly deteriorated. Susan is missing. But what is so tragic about her case is that she is also a mother of three. With a dark past that had all the hallmarks of a runaway teenager, her mother, Mary, is convinced Susan hasn’t run away this time. With a job that involves visiting people’s houses and a relationship on the rocks, something isn’t right and fingers begin to point at Susan’s husband, Ryan. As evidence mounts on both sides; a client with whom Susan has argued and dalliances that could be cited in a divorce case, things aren’t looking good. As Gina gets Susan’s image out to the local media and follows a runner who may have been eavesdropping, Mary does her own investigations into Susan’s blue box. Although it’s evident Susan misses her dead father, the musings and poems she has written incite a creepy mood and it’s at this halfway point, I wonder if Susan has been abducted by more than one person. Different point of view chapters from family members transports the reader into the minds of each character. Clare, Susan’s older sister is one of the most interesting. She sees herself as downtrodden and less attractive. One of life’s multiple failures. Susan has been a project since childhood, an obligation if you will, and Clare’s focus throughout the story is her struggle to fit in. With friends turning up dead, the case gets murkier by the minute and there are simply too many suspects to choose from. Fast-paced and easy to read, this is a thrilling, chilling tale which left me gut-punched at the final reveal! Thank you to Bookouture, Carla Kovach and Netgalley for an ARC of Her Dark Heart in exchange for an honest review.

    Loved!!!!!

This is the first book I read by Carla Kovach and she sure did not disappoint. She really nailed this one. This book is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone which I love. Sometimes it’s just so hard to try and start from the beginning. This book is about a mother and detective that refuse to give up finding a missing woman. Susan has a past of running away from her problems but did she do it again or is there something more sinister going on here? Would Susan just leave her 3 children and never come back or is the past coming back to haunt her? You find these answers and more. I want to start off by saying that I loved Detective Gina Harte. I loved her both as a detective and who she was as a person. The author did such a great job with making her so relatable that you just couldn’t help but love her. I also loved the ending of this book. It literally blew my mind. It had so many twists and turns you didn’t know what was going to come next. It was like a roller coaster ride that you never wanted to come off of. I still can’t believe the ending. I also like the plot of this book. I love missing person cases with a link to the past. As I read each chapter I kept wanting to know more and more on what happened to this poor woman and if she was ever going to be found. Between the plot, characters and all the twists in this book it made it an easy and fast read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    A Fabulous Instalment!

"Her Dark heart" is the fifth book in the 'DI Gina Harte' series though it is the second one I’ve read. This was a great read for me as a standalone psychological thriller, but no doubt it would have been better to have read the books in chronological order, from the beginning. In this instalment, when divorced mother of three, Susan Wheeler disappears, reactions are mixed. Susan’s mother Mary is worried. Susan had recently been finding things hard, but she loves her kids and would never leave them. Susan’s sister, Clare, is furious as this is not the first time she has gone missing. She believes Susan is an attention-seeking troublemaker who has been lying to the family. She knows that Susan has been sneaking out of her family home for weeks. Eventually, even Clare becomes fearful for Susan. When Mary unearths Susan’s diary, she begins to uncover a dark secret from Susan's childhood. When the final diary entry leads the police to a man who is discovered dead in a local park, they’re left wondering whether Susan has vanished because she is a victim or a suspect… The author has written a really clever and fascinating story that drew me in right from the very first page. Detective Gina Harte takes up the case, assisted by her team, hoping to discover what happened to Susan. Feisty and down-to-earth, Gina is a brilliant Detective Inspector. The supporting characters were an interesting assortment; some I liked, others I wasn't so keen on, but they all had a valuable contribution to make to the story-line. The fabulous plotting and great pacing by Carla Kovach also aided my enjoyment of the story. I suspected several of the characters, yet as is often the case, I failed to identify the actual perpetrator. Told from differing points of view, the story twisted and turned throughout the chapters, optimising the tension levels as the story propelled its way towards the revealing denouement. If you love a good detective series and psychological thriller with plenty of shocks and twists then "Her Dark Heart" is for you. I highly recommend this novel without any doubt. I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my request, from Bookouture via NetGalley and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
