    Love and Anguish

Holding the Man is a stark record of a young gay couple who grow up surrounded by the negative stigma of homosexuality, yet through their devotion form a strong and committed relationship. Through their times of ill health and loss of life, the themes of illness and death are explored in a horrifying and devastatingly uncensored way, leading to how it is to lose a lover, and continue afterwards, focusing on life with HIV/AIDS. A poignant and thought provoking read.

    Brilliant

Such a touching, real and gritty story. I loved it from start to finish. The realism was hard to read at points but the humour throughout made it a real page turner.

    Beautiful

Beautiful story about the reality of love and loss during the AIDS epidemic. Very easy read. A classic that can be read again and again.

    Beautiful and touching

This is a beautiful, well crafted account of the effect of AIDS on the couple involved and all those around them. Positivity and love shine through, proving just because you are gay, does not mean you don't know how to love and to feel the sorrow and emptiness felt by the loss of a loved one. I saw the movie and was moved to tears, as indeed I was by the book. The sentiment and joy shines through, and the death of John is sensitive and very movingly written. A thoroughly recommended read.

    Sad love story

Reading the book is much better than watching the movie. There is so much love written. Feels like I'm a good friend of the writer and went thru their lives together from back in the past till present.
