  • A gripping psychological thriller

What a read One Mistake is! Caught in its clutches from the get go, I was on the edge of my seat and through bleary eyes, I read this in one sitting well into the early hours of the morning. Make sure you have nothing else on when you start One Mistake as you will not be able to tear yourself away! You have been warned… Rona has created an interesting plot that delves into the issue of what one will do when under extreme pressure to keep their family afloat, when they fall on hard times. In desperation main protagonist Sara makes a decision that creates a ripple effect as lies and deceit are uncovered leading to a shocking revelation that I did not see coming! Witnessing the characters being bought to life was like meeting a new group of people, some you feel for as you get to know them and some you take an instant dislike to! The standout character for me was definitely Sara, my heart just went out to her. After a traumatic childhood, all she wants is a better life for her family than what she grew up in. I enjoyed the character of Hailey (Sara’s sister) and loved the relationship they shared. There is one character that I absolutely loathed, (although very well written for me to feel this way) No need to mention their name. You will know who it is when you read the book… I always enjoy reading Rona’s work. Her writing is very fluid and engaging and she knows how to get the readers attention and keep them enthralled. I have throughly enjoyed each book that she has released, but for me, I think that One Mistake is her best yet and is definitely a contender to be part of my best books for 2020. One Mistake is a fast paced read that will have you immediately hooked. With a strong plot that is full of tension and suspense, great characterisation and with a revelation that will knock your socks off, One Mistake is a gripping and must read for 2020. It was an absolute pleasure to read and review One Mistake which I highly recommend. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Rona Halsall for allowing me to read an advanced copy of One Mistake which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

  • Taut & Tense

😊 Rona Halsall writes an incredibly good psychological thriller. One Mistake follows Sara, who grew up in care and wants nothing more than to be able to keep her children safe. Mother to her two teenage daughters, Sophie and Amelia, and gorgeous four-year-old son Ezra, she has been happily married to Matt for eighteen years. One day, Matt announces that he has lost his job, but Sara knows she can keep the family afloat... if she can work out where the money will come from. When her boss offers her a possible answer she considers the opportunity, but will trusting him be her greatest mistake? I couldn't wait to get started on One Mistake and what unfolded was an extremely tense and suspenseful tale. The characters were expertly drawn and believable in their roles, the writing assured and vigorous. Rona Halsall was able to create a wonderful tone of foreboding that continued until the very last page, and frankly, I found the novel impossible to put down. It was a taut, mesmerising story chock-a-block with secrets, lies and deceit although not all instances were borne of evil intention. I loved the way the author revealed snippets of incidences as the story built to its satisfying conclusion. The added bonuses of the jittery moments and its general air of apprehension all helped to make One Mistake a true masterpiece. Overall, a clever and stylish psychological thriller delivering some surprises, complete with an outstanding, attention-grabbing plot. 😊 *previously titled: I OWE YOU* I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.

  • Wonderful psychological thriller

I loved that this book kept me wondering what was going on the whole time. The author was very clever and I didn’t see the plot twist coming at all. I loved that it was so realistic. So many people would go so far to protect their family and their “perfect” life, and this showed how easily that can go bad, quick. This book will keep you hooked from the very first page.
