    Thoroughly researched, enjoyable fiction

I had a great time with this book overall. You definitely feel like the character lives in this time and place, and it would be easy to believe there really was a Captain MacPhail we were following, albeit in a fictionalized fashion. I really appreciated the attention to detail, and while there were parts I knew about (and were accurate wherever I could check), I also learned a few interesting things about Passchendaele and the battles around it. Recommended especially for world-war 1 buffs, obviously, but also good for anyone with an interest in military history who isn't looking for some glorified adventure in period garb... it's not glorious, but it's a very good account of a good guy in an awful place.

    Duthie Does it in Spades

I am an avid reader of military history and fiction and this book ranks very high in its mix of both. The realism woven into the emotions of McPhail's character is engaging and a welcome departure from the laboured filler used by lesser authors. I am hooked on Duthie.

    Thought provoking, enjoyable read

Mr Duthie has a knack for making histroy come alive in a personable, humorous and sometimes heart-wrenching style. Am greatly looking forward to reading the next instalment.
