Great start to an excellent series

This is the first book in the Honor Harrington series of books and is a cracking read. Characterisations are great, feel like real human beings rather than some perfectly impossible super heroes. The action is gripping and builds to a huge and desperate climax... I am not spoiling anything when I say the goodies win (after all this is a long, long series!) but there is a horrible cost along the way. You could do a lot worse than use some of the material in leadership training courses. I bought my first book in this series in a second-hand shop on the Isle-of-Wight and have, since then, bought every one of the Honor Harrington novels by David Weber, reading the whole lot through again when a new book comes out. In some ways, I wish he would bring the saga to an epic and satisfying conclusion, after all David Weber has, for some years, been exploring the development of some of the other key characters in books (such as the Crown series) that hardly involve his central heroine at all.... but then, what fun reading the next one! My one disappointment: that he can't spell her first name correctly... but then I suppose he can't be blamed for living on the wrong side of the Atlantic? WARNING: reading On Basilisk Station could prove expensive, if my experience is anything to go by, you will be gagging to purchase the next , and the next, and the next and...

    Tall ship tale in space

Great read and fun way to explain interstellar travel. With all the swashbuckling of good old 18th century navel novel!

excellent kicka$$ lady without the romantic fluflu

This is the perfect sci-fi escape for anybody who likes a strong woman without a male swooping in to rescue her. Honor Harrington is a strong-willed, intelligent, martial arts wielding military captain. Perhaps the best part of the book is the lack of overt romance (unless you count her tree cat... yeah, she's a cat lady). Be prepared for a little politics. But it's mostly Honor pwning those who try to do her injustice.

    Basilisk Station

I happen to know that this is part of a great series. If you are thinking about buying this book then don't hesitate. It ranks right up there with the greats of others in this genre. Think the "Lensman" series by ' Doc' E.E. Smith. Buy now!
