    Rome as it wasn't

Màry Beard is a larger then life character known for her brilliant TV appearences. In this book she attacks the myths of Roman early history with gusto. The book is not a bed time read and takes time to digest the complexeties. Fact and fiction are often blurred as no one person knows the real truth, but we can make a general picture of events way back then. I am sure other scholars may dissagree with her at times, but that is what history is about. Glad I gave up Latin early as it was propagating the myths.

Brilliant. If you are intrigued as I am with ancient history you will find this book fulfilling. It gives a very balanced intelligent view of the politics life death and everything inbetween in Ancient Rome. It dispels myth and urban legend and keeps the grandiose claims of the time in a balanced realistic context. Thank you Mary Beard. This is the first of many of your books I shall be reading.

Many people may be familiar with Mary Beard as a television presenter. This book is for those who would like to know more about the history of Rome, particularly the earlier story of how the city developed. It is written in a clear, crisp style, easy to follow and not too solemn. I consider it a most enjoyable and informative read.

    Mediocre at best

Basically this book is a bunch of facts and assumptions interwoven in a completely confusing manner. The story jumps from fact to assumption to speculation to fact again in a manner that would put a jack rabbit on speed to shame. This is not a well written book and a great disappointment.
