    Required reading

If you want to understand the befuddled world that is U.S. church/state relations, then this book is for you. It places the culture wars squarely in the context of history. It describes how amazing the Establishment Clause was and shows how much all Americans stand to lose in abandoning it. Boston does speculate somewhat on the motivations of the Religious Right, but he backs these speculations up with the years of observations and discussions. I suspect he understands the motivations of theocrats better than they do themselves. Or at least more so than they would admit. Frightening worst case scenarios, yet provides reasonable options to diffuse the culture war in a way that could truly protect the rights of all.
