    Great stories,

This book provides us with a rare glimpse of how humor can affect us just as well as drama and tragedy. You get the history behind the literature, which is part of the joy. Pick up this little gem of a book and read it when you get a chance...you will surely not be disappointed.

    Balance,

At the time of this review, I had not yet gotten this book. This review is meant to help balance out the low reviews which are inaccurate (the ones about no table of contents and no short stories.)

    A fine collection

First to clear up some inaccuracies: 1. There is a table of contents. The "Goto" menu produces a very usable one. 2. There are indeed short stories here; nineteen unabridged treasures. The book launches with an introductory essay by the editor which explains his criteria for selecting material and also displays a good deal of subject knowledge. What follows is an assortment of exemplary tales that embody a neglected but crucial segment of our literary heritage. What a treat to find all these wonderful stories in one place. What a crime and mystery it is for so few people realize how much we have to offer beyond Mark Twain. This is a superb and necessary book.

    Good stories.

Not quite what you might expect. Good stories. Not today's humor, but still some of them are funny. Some of the stories are more about people who acted foolishly, with bad or good outcome. Some good life lessons. Also, some interesting insights into the life and culture of America 100+ years ago. I recommend it as a good read.
