16-year-old Drew Finch is initially quite pleased when her annoying little brother, Mason, is sent to a reform school; but then a mysterious woman hands her a note in the street – claiming her brother is in danger of being brainwashed by “the treatment”. With her mother and step-father refusing to believe her story, Drew determines to take matters into her own hands, and gets herself sent to Norton House too, in the hope of breaking Mason out from the inside. But once there, she's at the mercy of a prison-like security system and a team of “friends” who watch the students constantly, not to mention her roommate Jude, who seems determined to give the game away. But, despite the repeated hurdles in her way, Drew still has to find a way out before her brother is sent for treatment, and is personality is changed forever. This is an impressive debut YA novel for C. L. Taylor. Drew is a believable and likeable teenager, and her struggles feel very real. The reader can’t help but be drawn into her story, sharing her sense of desperation and truly willing her to succeed.
