  • Well written

I loved the premise of this book and eagerly anticipated reading it but I found it very difficult to read and I couldn’t connect with the characters. The writing however was flawless, that is the reason for my rating. I found myself getting annoyed with the main character Nora. This wasn’t one of my favorite plot lines but as I said the writing itself was fabulous.

  • you won't be disappointed

Nora asks her daughters, Libby and Emma to vacation with her in a Villa in France. Nora has plans to share some secrets on this trip that she has kept hidden from her daughters. The story is told in alternating points of view from Nora and her daughters. This is a family drama that will keep you glued to the pages. The secrets were quite shocking and also very sad. If you're looking for a quick and entertaining read, then you have found your book! Check out THE VILLA by Clare Boyd, you won't be disappointed. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.

  • Suspenseful family drama

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review. My rating: 4.5/5 stars This was a fast-paced suspenseful drama that grabbed my attention from the first chapter. I loved the dramatic and secretive family dynamic. I thought Nora's character was very well-developed. I liked her loving side and her narcissistic side. The bond that she had with her grandchildren was very sweet. Emma and Libby's characters were very strong and I loved their sisterly bond. It made me wish I had a sister! The plot was both thrilling and sad. I don't want to give anything away so that's all I will mention! This was one family vacation that didn't turn out as I expected it would. There were a bunch of plot twists that I enjoyed. The ending wasn't anything that I was expecting either. Highly recommend for all who love suspenseful family dramas!

  • An Addictive Family Drama-Suspense

Clare Boyd tests the boundaries of fiction genres with her addictive family drama-suspense, 'The Villa'. Instantly, Boyd depicts the tension and banter between sisters, Emma and Libby, and their tempestuous mother, Nora. The very unique relationship that each daughter has with Nora is obvious without requiring an extensive backstory, which was so well done. While alternating chapters view Emma's and Libby's experiences in the third-person, Nora allows readers to witness her experiences in the first-person which made for an incredible opportunity to gauge her demeanor from that perspective. Nora is a challenging character through this entire book – her narcissistic behavior is palpable, but there is something so manipulatively engaging about her that I couldn't bring myself to definitively hate her. Boyd constructed such relatable and plausible relationships between all of the characters in this family that their messy, affectionate repartee felt very real. 'The Villa' treats its readers to a delectable array of food, excursions, and midnight swims while luring them into the clouded secrets that wedge their way into the already jaded cracks in this family. I devoured this book for all of its captivating elements; the lies, conflicts, surprises, and shocking moments pulled at every emotion. If my heart wasn't racing with anxiety, it was pounding with anger, and during the final chapters I was reading through tears. I loved this book. I loved how Boyd wrote her characters and their interactions with one another; Libby ruffles up her nephew Eliot's hair during an exchange at the beach and in that single moment their relationship with each other is so clear. I loved the timing of the layered lies and secrets as they were revealed to me and to the characters. I loved the journey these characters embarked on as a family and individually. There is so much to say, but this book will speak for itself. I'll be enjoying 'The Villa' again and am excited to seek out more by Clare Boyd. I appreciate both the publisher, Bookouture, and NetGalley for approving my request to enjoy an electronic Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for my honest review.

  • Family vacation drama

If you love family sagas with lots of drama, you will probably like this book. I found it very slow going and since I was expecting a thriller, which this is not, I was disappointed. I just could not get into this story and I did not care for the majority of the characters. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this book.
