Lovely WWI Romance with a Modern Twist

As a fan of Annemarie Brear, I knew what I was getting with this novel and I wasn’t disappointed. Lexi’s marriage is in trouble and she seeks consolation in renovating a manor house. In the garden shed she finds the diary of a nurse named Allie during WWI and from that moment Lexi becomes fixated on Allie’s story. Her experiences are dealt with realistically but without being overly sentimental, the well vaunted British stiff upper lip employed at the time – bearing in mind Allie is Australian. A story of the horrors of war, forbidden love and living in the moment, in which Lexi finds new perspective in her own life. The two stories don’t overlap, but exist in their own right and complement each other perfectly, forming two distinct and quite different characters. I loved the descriptions of the field hospitals of WWI and the emphasis on gleaning tiny beams of light from all the misery – a hot cup of tea, a real meal in a restaurant or a day with someone you love that sustains you for months. A multi-layered, beautifully written story, and highly recommended.

I am wondering where the dragonflies were in relat

Really enjoyed the story. Brings back how rough people had it long ago during the war and how much easier we have it now.

Great read and her first novel. Can't wait for the next!! Really well developed characters. Very descriptive but not over loaded. It was a warm, good feel story (my kind of book)better than 🍔🍟☕!!!!
