    Decent enough

It is pretty good, as always with this author lots of well written action and it is certainly an improvement on book 1. It is frustrating that after 2 volumes there is little or no character development and we know hardly any more (or care) about the principles than at the very start. Also at times we seem to be following the central character at the expense of some possibly interesting things elsewhere...in particular with the fate of one key character dealt with in an almost blasé way when the story deserves more attention to detail (IMHO of course). I liked it but this series could be really really good !

    Earth magic unveiled

Snake Heart, the second book in the Chains of Honour series, brings this new series to another level. In this book Yanko begins to truly come into his own. From the uncertain, awkward and self-conscious eighteen-year-old of the first book, he grows into a youth more confident in his loyalties if not his own abilities. Even there, he makes progress, honing his magic skills with the help of none other than the title character, Snake Heart, his infamous pirate mother. Yanko not only meets her but spends several days iwith her in a status somewhere between prisoner and student. There’s not a lot of love lost between them, but neither are they overt enemies, and in learning her story and why she left Nuria, Yanko gains some understanding of her choice. In this series, the romance angle is much more muted than in most of Buroker’s books. But then Yanko is only eighteen – which does not stop him from desiring romance, only from attaining it. He does make some progress in sharing his feelings with Arayevo, though this does not have the outcome he would wish. But perhaps he will learn to direct his yearnings in a more opportune direction. Dak continues in his role of bodyguard throughout the book, and Yanko finally learns some of his story as well, discovering that Dak is indeed not merely a soldier, but a capable officer and the Turgonian president’s nephew (for all the good that does either of them). Yanko's conviction that Dak is likely a rival in the quest for the lost continent appears to be borne out, though Dak continues to assist Yanko in his attempt to thwart his other rival, the Nurian mage Sun Dragon who also makes a reappearance near the end. And what an end! The various factions have all converged on the fabled lodestone, but once it is found the plot only becomes more intriguing. Over the last several chapters the tension mounts as Yanko draws near to what may prove the culmination of his quest. Will this lost continent, should it be found, and should the Nurians gain control, truly prove the salvation Yanko so desires for his people? Sun Dragon seems to have the upper hand while Yanko waits and watches for his opportunity – or will the Turgonians come out on top? You’ll have to read it to find out! The book ends with both Yanko and Dak in a bad position, but one that promises plenty of action and adventure in the next instalment – which, Buroker informs us, we will have to wait until fall to read. In the meantime, Snake Heart is a great read, and you can always use the time to catch up on Buroker’s other series.

    a great read

Oh Yanko.... he really is an imperfect hero. Maybe a realistic one? This book may well be better than the first in the series. The adventure was enjoyable as usual, and the characters' relationships really blur the lines between friend and enemy. A really great read!

    Snake Heart

A very enjoyable read. Very suspenseful with lots of action. I highly recommend this series by Lindsay Buroker.
