I recently saw the show of this in Netflix. At first I did not know there was a book. When i found out the was, I looked it up and started reading. I already love it and I am just at page 23!

    2 thumbs up

I first watched the Netflix tv series before reading this book. The tv series intrigued me to find out the true story behind the tv series. Of course the tv series was overly dramatize for entertainment value but the book focused on the details, the nitty gritty of what happens behind bars which gave me a deeper insight of the reality we don't get to see often in our comfortable world. Kerman is smart story teller - she says it like it is, no fluff or gimmicks - she gave a truthful recount on what happened and because she's so genuine with her word, I felt it. On nights where I was slowly devouring the book page by page, I felt almost like I was in prison with her. She wrote her raw emotions about committing a crime and then having to pay the consequences by going to prison, holding her life on hold for 13 months and being confined in a space with all these other women - it was real, gripping and well thought out. For those who were like me, you find out the reality of prison, read it, you're in for a cold and jolting wake up call.

    Orange is the New Black

Heartwarming, tragic, sad, funny, uplifting and thought provoking. Loved the series, but the book is a must read. Brilliant!

    Orange is a good read

I have seen the series advertised but never been sure if I wanted to watch it, but after reading this I'm definitely been missing something! A wonderful read Piper had an amazing journey and to write about it was brave and very interesting.
