    Other Minds

This is an exploration of the nature and origin of the phenomenon of consciousness using the author's personal observations of the fascinating behaviours of octopuses and cuttlefish as a focus. Because these are truly alien intelligences, with perhaps as many as 12 cooperating sub-brains, the author is able to lure the reader quite painlessly into a very erudite (and comprehensively referenced) consideration of the earliest origins of nervous systems, sentience and consciousness.

Like an octopus: always fascinating, never dry

Easy to read and endlessly interesting book on the evolution of cephalopod—especially octopus—intelligence, with plenty of theorising on animal and human consciousness too. It seems that cephalopod intelligence evolved in a parallel and independent stream to that of most other animals, and acts in a quite different way—but is no less inferior.
