    Seven Pillars of Wisdom

Now that I am retired I have time tocatch up on the reading I promised myself. That is just as well because completing abook this size would have been difficult with my career. It runs over 600 pages and is best carried in electronic format. Lawrence does not waste space on the page. He fully describes the scene so as to give us an appreciation of the difficulties and his love for the beauty of the terrain. We share his moods and concerns. We can also understand his reasoning when planning an assault. One of the many reasons for his success is heknew what he was doing. He was a highly competent tactician. Even more than that, Lawrence immersed himself completely into the language and culture of the Arab people. Men respect competence and cultural sensitivity. Lawrence was an extraordinately effective leader. Icannot help speculating what would have happened in our own misadventures in the same area if we had a man like D E Lawrence on our side. At the very least this should be required reading for everyone in Washington.
