    Thanks for your feedback!

    Great Read.

As a Tolkien fan I was wary of another author trying to do the whole alternative magic middle ages thing so I hadn't read the books or watched the TV version. My daughter kept at me to read the books before seeing the series and having just finished A Game Of Thrones I'm glad I did. The detail and historical background are superb and the characters! You begin by hating someone and end up almost cheering for therm. Already dived into Kobo for the second book. I'm hooked Aileen!

    A Game of Thrones

A good read and more detailed than the television series. Definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.

A Song Of Ice & Fire hits the right notes

If I had to desribe this book in word it would be wow. One of the best books I've read and one of the best written books in the genre of Epic Fantasy. From a purely technical perspective it has been written with a great deal of professionalism and proficency. George R.R Martin is a man who clearly know's his craft. The book is well structered, paced and, for this genre, original and innovative. Gone are goblins and spells and in comes a whole mixture of theme's and topics ranging from political intrigue at court to some small elements of murder-mystery with several battle and fight scenes packed in for good measure. The whole book feels like a journey and everything grows and flows organically and with a sense of realism - but the latter never to the detriment of eqxuisite armour, stunning locations or powerful creatures. The characters feel real, they are ambigiuos, flawed and with thier own codes, motivations, strengths and failings. They develop throughout and the story grows with them. All the while G.R.R Martin builds and layers a fantastic world with his detailed descriptive style bringing to life people, places, locations, even simple senses and atmosphere as this world is slowly revealed to us. There is a great deal of quality in this book and I have only touched upon it here and it is a book that is deserving of it's place and awards and G.R.R Martin is an anuthor deserving of his acclaim as it's author. It is not perfect however - hence the 4 stars and not 5. The sheer volume of description can drag. It is not so much that he describes things in to much detail, more that sometime he desribes so many things that he leads you to wish he would get on with the story itself. The description can become self-indulgent. This also gives the book a somewhat pedistrian pace. It is not that it is actually slow per se, more that sometimes it can feel slow. I also felt that the volume of secondary and tertiary characters was perhaps too large. The main cast and many others beside with smaller roles to play, are mostly developed well but on rare occassion I did find there was some duplication and that at times character development was left wanting. These are but minor quibbles though when weighed against the whole. And that whole is a very well written, original and expansive work that is well worth the price and fully deserving of it's reputation. You don't need to be a fan of the genre or to have seen the TV show in order to enjoy it and I really would recommend this to anyone. It does require alot of concentration as it is a rich and complex novel but it's worth it. I would give a word of caution however to those who have seen the TV series already. It is slower and it doesn't have quite same visceral thrill so don't expect a novel version of the TV show - but do expect a wonderful piece of literature. Go in with that mindset and you'll enjoy it and maybe, as I have done, come to love it more than the TV show itself. Finally, a word of praise for those who handled putting this into ebook format. The illustrations were clear (and those of you lucky enough to be reading this on a Aura H20 or Glo HD will enjoy them even more), it was formatted well and I experienced no issues or bugs and all the links worked as they should.

The Writing Style Was Not My Cup Of Tea

I'm not going to lie, this book was really not for me - I found it pretty tedious to slog through. I enjoy the TV show (mostly!) but found it wasn't quite my cup of tea in written form. If anyone wants a comparison - I didn't love reading Lord of the Rings, but did love reading the Hobbit. If Lord of the Rings was too waffly for you, this might be too.
