  • Mehh

I didn’t like the format of the story quiet a few times I would go back a page thinking I double tapped my ereader and missed a page. I found there to be a fair bit of pointless banter but also a few funny quips. Didn’t really care for the story as a whole which is too bad, I really wanted to like this book but too much of the story had me irritated.

  • Reverse psychology?

I thought this book was going to have a twist from the usual formula. Spoiler alert it wasn’t but the male protagonist is so selfish, as quite a few people tell him through out the story plus he fell asleep on top of her in bed! The female lead makes me sad, she doesn’t even end up with a promotion or a pay rise plus as a journalist she didn’t even bother to write a decent story when she was basically under cover! Maybe they did deserve each other after all.

  • Fun Beach Read

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It's fun. Sam is one of the most believable romance heroines I've encountered in awhile. The story follows somewhat of a love triangle as Sam works to build her career and her self esteem. I very much felt Sam picked the wrong guy, but am willing to concede this is subjective. Honestly, the fact that I was so passionate about her choice speaks well to the writing of the story. I would say this is a great beach read or a relaxing weekend. Note: I was provided an eARC for my honest review.

  • Entertaining Though A Bit Misguided For Today

Hayes new romantic romp is an interesting and fun read although it does suffer from a lack of feminism which maybe a problem in the current socio-political climate. The story switches from first person to third person which is a bit jarring at first but the further I read, the more I felt it worked and was a nice narrative twist to the writing. Hayes manages this very well and although at times the third person narrative doesn’t really do justice to the understanding of the character, it did off sets Sam’s first person to even her character out slightly. The lack of focus and intrigue at times can get in the way of the book with Sam being an emotionally, body conscientious and socially awkward not picking up on things when the reader is already ten paces ahead. It is a bit like Clark Kent and Superman, everyone can see it is the same person but the people and characters within the pages don’t have a clue. Without revealing spoilers, it is very apparent who Al is although the two main characters do not have a clue. If this book was released five years ago, it would probably have a different reception but due to the current climate of #Me Too and sexual aggression hitting the foreground of today, there are quite a few scenes that raise questions that may not be appropriate for an audience of today. I did have problems with one particular scene where Dave is saying just tell me No, has he sexually assaults a character. This may have played differently if this book came out a couple of years ago then it does today. Overall, I did enjoy the book and there is a lot of good in the book which is a very enjoyable summer read. If you read the book and not put too much thought into some of the plot narratives, you will find a fun loving and entertaining narrative. Hayes is very talented writer and her plotting and characters are remembered long after you finish though with this particular book, the timing is probably a bit misguided.

  • Really?

I loved Celia Hayes' other two books. That's what prompted me to buy this one. I liked the storyline about Curvy girls, but what fell flat for me was the male love interest who was an arrogant bully, and when she could have had the one that adored her, she chose the macho, tough to figure out guy. All I had to think was "a leopard doesn't change his spots"...this character will always be this way, they never change. And shame on the female lead character for thinking he might. They DON'T. And that kind of machsimo, arrogant, non-feminist/or female supportive partner is going to get old fast. This relationship is a recipe for disaster. Every time Sam started to yearn for Dave, I would think NO, NO, NO. And every time, the guy was a total nob, barging in and bossing her around. It was a real throwback to a time in our lives that doesn't and shouldn't exist anymore. I had to read it all, and in the end, although I really like Celia's storytelling and writing style, this fell kind of flat for me, simply because of that really dysfunctional, truly going to go nowhere, relationship. It made me mad, and sad for Sam that she kept choosing to settle for less than she deserved.
