    Oldies But Goodies

Like many, I had started the Sherlock books because of his- as and icon- growing popularity: at the time it was because of the movies starring Robert Downey Jr. as opposed to the stellar BBC show, but that's irrelevant. Having mainly experienced the likes of Charles Dickens and writers with similar styles of prose, I was a bit skeptical going into it about how much I'd enjoy it; not because I disliked classics per se, but mainly because they were always lengthy and overly descriptive affairs compared to modern titles, and so could be a bit of a trudge to get through. Fortunately, I met no such difficulties with the Sherlock Holmes stories: the language- while not exactly modern- was easy enough for me to understand, and the descriptions were relatively short and sweet; because the majority of Sherlock-ian works were short stories, they were well paced and unhindered by 'literary fluff'; the plot of each mystery was original, novel and enjoyable, and kept me engaged from start to finish; and, while the secondary characters didn't always feel completely fleshed out, the characters of both Holmes and Watson were compelling and enjoyable throughout. As such, if you even have a SLIVER of interest in Sherlock or good literature but feel put off by the series' age or status as 'classic literature', don't be: it may be about a century old, but is as easy and pleasant to read now as it was then, and is a reading experience I can confidently recommend to just about everyone. Give it a shot, if you have the time; you won't regret it.

Good stories although a little long winded. Still very enjoyable!
