    Almost succeds

You have to be fan of Industrial Revolution England to fully appreciate the nuances skillfully woven together here. A sterling effort.

    Deserves higher than a 3

I'm quite surprised this book has a 3 rating. It should have a higher score. The world building is distinct (dinosaurs roaming steampunk England, where technologies equates to theologies); the social, economic and political aspects of the world are thought out; the plot is clear; the pacing is constant; and the characters are 3 dimensional in most places. From what I can see this book builds a good foundation, and much unsaid here is sure to be elaborated in successive books. I think the book is worth the price of admission, and I would recommend it

Oddly likeable and dark in one

It's funny how there seems to have been an unwritten rule in my head rationing the number of active concepts. Here we have steampunk mixed with historical figures, dinosaurs and vampires. And it works. That's because the story is engaging, moves steadily, and the characters are interesting.

    Strory line not believable

I pushed myself to finish this book even when parts are just hard to believe even in a fantasy. The premise that a "boiler machine" that you feed with coal can act as a robot is kind of hard to swallow. I t is a shame since the rest of this fantasy book is quite interesting. These boilers were brought in at the 3/4 mark. The rest of the story has interesting characters, zombie type creatures that eats human flesh, a crazy king and dinosaurs. Lots of intrigue and mystery. One misstep in the story line sort of ruined it for me. Very unfortunate since the book is very well written and captivating otherwise.
