  • Suspenseful Thriller with a hint of romance

What a great start to a new series. This suspenseful thriller with a slow burn romance. There were so many twists and turns it kept me wondering. Laurel is quite unique. She is a Special Agent with the FBI who hunts serial killers and when one is killing women in her hometown she heads their to find the killer. What a roller coaster. Although the serial killer is found, there is more story left to figure out. Looking forward to discovering more about these characters.

  • Fascinating edge-of-your-seat thriller!

Laurel is not your usual FBI profiler. With her eidetic memory and no-nonsense approach, she dives right into the middle of a serial killer case in her hometown. Having to work with the gruff Fish and Wildlife officer, Huck, proves to be both a blessing and a curse. Huck is the perfect balance to Laurel and I really enjoyed watching their romantic and professional relationships develop. This is a serial killer story, so be prepared for the high body count. For my own sanity I had to skim through the brief sections that were told through the eyes of a couple victims, but most folks probably wouldn't have a problem with them. The investigation is riveting, with lots of secrets and more than a couple twisty surprises. Ultimately, good wins over evil and there's a loosely acknowledged HEA for Laurel and Huck. If you like the Criminal Minds series or love to read crime dramas, you don't want to miss this excellent book. The vocabulary is quite broad, perfect for an armchair etymologist like myself, who really enjoys looking up new words. The characters immediately come to life, and the pacing was a terrific balance between the high-stakes action and the more contemplative character studies. I love this author and highly recommend this story. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

  • Introducing Laurel

Keeps you guessing until the end! Lots of twists and turns. Introduction to many characters. Huck is a bit hard to like. Laurel is smart and intriguing. This story is light on romance. I really wished for more romance. Excited to see what happens next!

  • Intense!

Whoa! This was one intense ride! From the first few pages Laurel captured my attention. She’s so unique compared to the average heroine. I loved the little “parlor tricks” she did for her boss and was a bit disappointed that we didn’t see more of that ability come into play as the story continued. That’s not to say the story was lacking, just hoping that we see this talent shine in the future. Even after finishing this, I know that thoughts of Laurel will be running through my mind for a long while. This is predominantly written from the heroine’s point of view. However, we did get Huck’s insights a few times. I’m curious to see exactly what all he’s been through. Despite Laurel being trained to protect herself, Huck tends to take steps to protect her. And well, considering what all she goes through, perhaps he has every reason to do so. I’m hoping we get much more of him. There is a constant ebb and flow of danger and suspense interlaced with the dark, heavy weight of secondary characters that kept me turning pages. I never knew which way to look. Where was the threat coming from and who was behind it? This was totally mind boggling. Along the way was the slow burn between Huck and Laurel making me antsy for more of them as I needed them to get to a safe place so they could have more. I literally read this book feeling as if I were sitting on pins and needles the whole time. While this does end without a huge cliffhanger, it leaves us with unanswered questions as well as unresolved issues regarding certain characters. I can’t wait to see what this author has planned in future books.

  • Couldn't put it down!

Fast paced romantic suspense at its best!!! I couldn't put it down and stayed up half the night to finish reading this book. The characters were interesting and engaging and I quickly found myself immersed in their story. The author kept me guessing right up until the end - every time I thought I'd figured something out, she'd add a twist to surprise me. If you enjoy the genre, you will love this novel and want to put it at the top of your TBR list. The author is on my must read authors' list.
