“Overcoming Trauma: Lessons from Coronavirus and Beyond” is a breezy read that tackles the art of coping deeply distressing experiences during the Coronavirus pandemic. As we are locked down by a lethal virus, this insightful book, framed by 129 pages of wisdom, lays down the art of overcoming trauma. It is relevant, topical and timely. The topics cover diverse situations from dealing with emotional shock to reality-based hoping, among other things. Chapter 14, for example, tackles a faith-based dimension that discusses financial hardships. Some phrases take a humorous slant: “Birds have bills too, but they keep singing.” On God’s role: “He may be showing you wise principles - such as, spending only what you have, saving, investing, avoiding putting your faith in a job or future that’s never certain.” As chapters end, words of the wise emerge, like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow underlining the nature of grieving: “… that there is no grief like the grief which does not speak.” There are anecdotes in the text that mirror how we spent our time in quarantine: Viber group chats, online therapies for smoking habits, etc. There are plenty to go around here. All in all, I found the book well written and easy to grasp. On a personal note, I share with the pains, fears, hopelessness, and emptiness of the people affected with the virus. This is a leisurely read and a great gift to others who may just benefit from its wisdom. Highly recommended!

  • Hope amid COVID-19

This book, "Overcoming Trauma: Lessons from Coronavirus and Beyond" describes COVID-19’s effect on mental health from the perspective of a Filipino psychotherapist. It weaves together personal narratives, quotes and clinical descriptions to give us a better understanding of how the global pandemic has affected our inner psyche. • Intriguing book, very insightful and helpful!

The book intrigued me, with its creative prose, insights that are psychological, practical, and spiritual especially at this horrific time of the CORONAVIRUS pandemic! I recommend it to everyone - whether normally struggling or getting out of control in their mental state! The book is redemptive.
