Disappointing
Having read and enjoyed the Vera and Shetland series I was disappointed in this book. I gave up after five chapters, the plot was as weak as the characters. as the characters.

Nice start to a new series
It took me a moment to warm to Matthew Venn, the new investigator in Ann Cleeves world. It all begins with a dead body on the beach; the victim wanted to do right by some people and expose some wrongdoings. Two kidnappings later, Venn finally get the answers he seeks and kills two birds with one stone when his investigation puts an end to the rein of terror of the local religious bigot.
