Cults and Murders in 1960s California

This is a loosely based historical novel on the Manson Family murders. Evie is an isolated girl growing up in Northern California with divorced parents. After a fight with her Mom she meets members of a cult living on a rundown ranch presided over by a charismatic leader. The members are the first people to really pay attention to Evie and she falls under their spell. The book is told in flashbacks and Evie is still living a very isolated life. Anyone familiar with the Manson story will already know how the book ends. I found the beginning of the book good but the middle started to drag for me and I found the ending to be disappointing. This was just an OK read for me. I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review

    Disturbing and addicting

The Girls tells the story of a dysfunctional and disturbed young woman and the group she joined circa California in the late 60's. Violence and sexual content involving the cult like existence they lived. Similar to a would be Manson style ............

    Girls Review

The overall concept and basic plot are both interesting, but while I thought it was an Easy read it also became a bit of a Tedious read... All the hype about being such a great summer read was just that - hype. I thought this book was written in a somewhat pedestrian style with an awkward syntax & rhythm. However, at times it felt like the author tried to make it seem more intellectual by throwing in the occasional "big word" to attempt an affectation of sophistication that was incongruous with the rest of the book.

    The Girls

I eagerly waited for this book to come out. I have been intrigued by the Manson stories for a very long time and have read just about everything there is out there on the crimes, Charles Manson and the Manson followers. Unfortunately this book didn't work for me. I had a very hard time getting in to it, I thought it moved very slow and I just couldn't connect with the characters. The story switches back and forth between back then and now and that didn't work for me either.

    Meh read.

It was an awkward beginning to get to the core of the story. When it did pick up, it was a good read. Didn't feel sorry for the MC.
