One of the Best Books Ever Written

With my Welsh heritage I have always been curious about this book, especially after seeing the 1945(?) movie. Finally, Having been encouraged by the reviews on Kobo, I plunged in and am so glad that I did. The narrator is raised in a protected environment sheltered by a close, loving and intelligent family. Initially life is good, wages are high, the environment is beautiful and, although coal miners, they can afford their own home. The work is hard, but the men put up with it and tend to conceal the realities from their wives and children. There is an imperative to encourage children to become educated and to move onto an easier way of life. Sadly, good things never last and working conditions deteriorate along with the environment. The valley and eventually the village are gradually smothered by slag heaps. More mines open and more men are attracted by the opportunity for well paid jobs. Soon there are too many of them and wage rates fall while conditions become harsher, especially following a disastrous strike. Huw Morgan's brothers being natural leaders soon find themselves embroiled in union politics, the consequences of which drive them out of the valley. Huw, himself loses the opportunities open to him by becoming over-emotionally involved in all of the social strife which occurs. Against this rather familiar background though, is a wonderful tale of family loyalty, unrequited love and the incredible respect that the Morgan family are able to retain for their friends and neighbours despite patterns of mean-spiritidness and religious hypocrisy that run through these isolated communities. This is also a story that tells of Huw's spiritual journey through life. In many ways he does not truly grow up until late middle age and it feels as though the author is speaking from the heart through Huw. I defy you to get through the last few lines of this wonderful book without a catch in your throat.

    Great narrative of life!

Recommended by my English teacher. It was possibly the best book I've ever read. There is no central plot, and if you're looking for a quick read this is not the book for you. It should be read like a marathon, contemplating at each stage of Huw's--the protagonist: the youngest boy in a Welsh mining family--life. We see people come and go throughout the book. Love. Betrayal. More similar to real life than any work of fiction I've read, in its sense of patience and suddenness. The only constant change is the modernization of the world around the village. It is essentially several average novels in one, giving us different 'episodes' of the Welsh village over a span of about 18 years I'd guess. Truly fantastic. Additionally, you'll love the way they talk. "There is beautiful, she was." "Two pence on sweets in one day?"<-tell that to a child today :) Perhaps the language is redundant and old fashioned, but the overall feeling of watching a boy grow up--and forming bonds with characters who remain for years, only to vanish forever--leaves one with a feeling that cannot be explained. If you enjoy it as much as I did, there are 3 sequels, though they aren't available on the kobo store (where I am at least). If there is any complaint, someone may argue the pace was too slow at parts. Read the rich descriptions Llewellyn weaves through these 'dry' moments. It is more interesting than one may think. Solid 5 stars from me.

    How green was my valley

A wonderful and compassionate story of the life of the coal miners of South Wales and a typical mining village at the turn of the last century. It was where I grew up with fond memories of the camaraderie of the miners - a tough and resilient group of people that loved to sing and drink.
