    Amazing book! Love this series

The 5th to Die by J.D. Barker is the 2nd in the Detective Sam Porter (4MK) series Series Background (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books): Homicide Detective Sam Porter has been on the hunt for a serial killer for over 5 years. They call him the 4MK killer for short, in deference to the “No Evil” monkeys of myth. He leaves behind the ear, the eyes, the tongue…before leaving the body. The targets are usually the loved one of someone the killer determines has done evil. They now know his name. Anson Bishop. Porter’s team consists of Detectives Brian Nash and Clair Norton as well as IT Specialist Edwin Klozowski. Recently, Anson Bishop infiltrated Porter’s team, and wreaked havoc. They are still recovering. My Synopsis: Two weeks after she went missing, the body of a young teenage girl is found frozen in Jackson Park Lagoon, wearing the clothes of a girl who just went missing yesterday….but the pond froze solid about 3 weeks ago. How is that possible? Then there is the fact that they say she died in salt water. The lagoon was not salt water. Perplexing questions will lead to more questions. The press automatically assume this is the work of 4MK. Sam Porter is not convinced. Porter is in trouble again. He was taken off the 4MK case when the press started reporting that he had let the killer go, even though that was not true. The FBI has taken over the case, which they say was botched badly….but there are actually political reasons for this move. It doesn’t matter, Porter can’t really let it go, and when it is found that he is still digging around, he is suspended. That’s okay, it gives him more time to pursue 4MK himself….It looks like travel is in his future. So his team is left to handle the missing/murdered girls without Porter’s help. Meanwhile FBI Special Agent Frank Poole is trying to work the 4MK case, and quickly realizes that Porter probably has the best understanding of 4MK, so he reaches out to him. But Porter has already got himself in deeper than he should, and he is again being manipulated the Anson Bishop. My Opinions: I really love this series and the characters that Barker has created. They all have depth, and the comradery of the team is evident. It is told from a few different Points of View, and that really keeps the story moving, and everything straight-forward. We find out a lot of background about Sam and his wife, and even more about 4MK, and his mother! WOW…some surprises there. It is a big book….a long detailed narrative, but it keeps you interested, mesmerized, awake…you are never bored….and of course, it doesn’t really end, because this is a series about a specific serial killer, so…. On another note…you must read the first book before you start this one. It’s not a series you can jump into. This has fast become a favorite!

    5-star read

Evil has a name: Anson Bishop. He is smart, ruthless, a manipulator and liar. How is it possible to tell the truth from all the lies. He has all the knowledge and everyone else scatters around and tries to keep up. He kills without hesitation and remorse. Can it really be so easy for som people to murder a child? And in this book, the parents haven't even done anything criminal. They just did their jobs. And then there is poor Sam Porter. He has no idea (still) what's going on. Maybe, he did, in the end, have some clue. But being suspended from his police work, thought of as partner of 4MK by the FBI, the whole book he tries to end the nightmare created by Bishop. Being betrayed by somebody he thought of as becoming a friend, having a connection with. Porter wants nothing more than to bring Bishop in and find some peace, In the end though, he has to let him go - again. I absolutely loved this book. An intense ride from the start 'til the last sentence. Everything tied up in the end and that is something I like in a story. There is a wide range in personalities too: Some I liked, some I was fooled by too, some I really couldn't stand. Can't wait 'til the next book coming out and solving the riddle that is Anson Bishop.

    Intricate, creepy, and dark!

The Fifth to Die is a brilliantly crafted, gritty, riveting thriller that takes you on a hunt for a kidnapper with a fondness for saltwater and continues the pursuit for a sadistic serial killer with a penchant for retribution and body parts. The writing is precise, eerie, and seamless. The characterization is spot on with characters that are driven, reckless and flawed, including the tenacious and tough Detective Porter whose greatest struggles involve his grief, secrets, and obsessions. And the plot is a violent, twisty, tension-filled thrill ride that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish and leaves you absolutely speechless and wanting more. Overall, The Fifth to Die is an intelligent, gripping, exceptionally fast-paced police procedural that highlights Barker's extraordinary imagination and talent as a spine-chilling storyteller. It's the second novel in the 4MK Thriller series, and I have to recommend that if you haven't already read The Fourth Monkey (4MK Thriller #1), you really have to.
