Struggle through the first part to find the gem

As other reviews have mentioned, the first 100 pages of this book are a struggle. There is frequent time changes and situation changes. When you push past it, you find the hidden gem in this novel. Birdie is a novel where women are struggling to escape their past and re-invent themselves. Highly recommend.

    Birdie

This is an intense read. It speaks clearly of the struggle of inter generational trauma in the voice of a young Cree woman. It is not an easy read as it does jump from past to present to illuminate her experience but well work the effort.

Birdie Deserves Your Attention and Respect

This will be a very strange review. I only read the first 5 chapters and the last 2 chapters. It is beautifully written - getting inside the mind and heart of a severely traumatized Canadian Aboriginal woman, Birdie, as she slowly but surely find her way "home" and to health with the help of the women in her life. Well done, author Tracey Lindberg. But, I only read the beginning and the end because the pain triggered severe pain in me and I needed to skip over the details. I needed to see how Birdie finds her way through a life of severe trauma and come to enough peace to go forward. Ms. Lindberg writes with such compassion and insight and deep understanding. Highly recommended.

    A captivating story

Eloquently written story shows how residential schools affected us, how we relate to one another and how we transform ourselves. Told from the perspective of different characters, we see how resilience takes many forms. The story is vivid and captivating; I felt I was walking along side Birdie while reading the book.

    Birdie

I didn't care for this book! Personalities confusing and hard to follow.
