    Mothers and sons

After enjoying this beautifully nuanced evocation of a mother's love for her son, I look forward to reading more from this Canadian writer. As the book over art shows, Hay also evokes her characters' love of the woods and lake country of Ontario. Despite of the title, the intimate relationship between Nan and her son Jim only covers his life between the ages of ten and seventeen while her memories briefly add the back stories of her and her other son. Balancing these are the present stories of Nan, her husband George and her life long friend Lulu who is the contrasting character in conflict with her brother and the kind of eccentric aunt that every young boy would like.
